{"id":92,"date":"2019-03-07T14:38:25","date_gmt":"2019-03-07T14:38:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/trees.climateactionchildhood.net\/?p=92"},"modified":"2019-03-07T14:38:25","modified_gmt":"2019-03-07T14:38:25","slug":"taking-it-to-the-streets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trees.climateactionchildhood.net\/index.php\/2019\/03\/07\/taking-it-to-the-streets\/","title":{"rendered":"Taking it to the Streets"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>By Narda Nelson &#8211; January 29, 2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three <g class=\"gr_ gr_9 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling multiReplace\" id=\"9\" data-gr-id=\"9\">centres<\/g> were scheduled for \u2018atrium time\u2019 this morning.&nbsp;&nbsp;Children, educators, and pedagogists&nbsp;meet&nbsp;regularly here to&nbsp;review documentation,&nbsp;experiment, draw, and&nbsp;speculate&nbsp;together.&nbsp;&nbsp;Closet doors become de facto display space for posting pedagogical narrations. Sticking pieces of paper to closet doors is part of an ongoing intention to make inquiry work visible to families, educators, students and children passing through:&nbsp;<em>\u201cSomething is happening here!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a public space.&nbsp;Iris Berger (2010) tells us about the emphasis feminist philosopher, Hannah Arendt, places on public spaces wherein \u201c[s]he described the public realm as a \u2018place of appearances\u2019; a place for \u2018being seen and heard\u2019\u2026and, most importantly, a place where stories are told and relations between narratives occur\u201d (p. 59):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Being seen and being heard by others derive their significance from the fact that everybody sees and hears from a different position.&nbsp;&nbsp;This is the meaning of public life\u2026Each time we talk about things that can be experienced only in privacy or intimacy, we bring them out into a sphere where they will assume a kind of reality\u2026The presence of others who see what we see and hear what we hear assures us of the reality of the world and ourselves.<\/p><cite>Arendt (1998) in Berger (2010, p. 60)<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Low-flow toilets are also part of the new reality in this public space.&nbsp;&nbsp;They matter here in more ways than most people care to know.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sewage pipes clog regularly since their installation, backing up onto floors as rubber-gloved educators deal with young bodies and bathroom mess, part of the unintended consequence of trying to do \u2018what\u2019s best\u2019 in uncertain times.&nbsp;I had planned to project video clips and photos from the previous week\u2019s forest inquiry time onto atrium walls this morning to hear what the children thought about the footage\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-very-dark-gray-color\"><em>What was happening in this video?&nbsp;What story were we trying to tell?&nbsp;&nbsp;Did our experiment \u2018work\u2019?&nbsp;&nbsp;Do these images tell us anything different about trees?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the grind of metal against porcelain and a plumbing snake sticking out from the bathroom greet me as I walk in the atrium.&nbsp;&nbsp;Childhood <g class=\"gr_ gr_6 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling multiReplace\" id=\"6\" data-gr-id=\"6\">centre<\/g> doors are closed to the room.&nbsp;&nbsp;Two toddlers watch with fascination through an atrium-classroom window as the plumber starts the now weekly ritual of feeding the snake down into the pipes to clear whatever is clogging them.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">New toilets.&nbsp;&nbsp;Less water.&nbsp;Old pipes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Low-flow toilets satisfy new building codes aimed at bringing more sustainable structures into existence.&nbsp;Except.&nbsp;&nbsp;We cannot seem to flush our excess away.&nbsp;&nbsp;Excrement and wads of toilet paper, clay, dirt, and bits of food haunt the centres\u2019 pipes, in the same way increased street run-off haunts tree roots in Haro Woods, and hormones and chemical toxins haunt clam beds, fish, and orca bodies in the Salish Sea.&nbsp;&nbsp;These haunting inheritances contribute to an increasing sense of urgency around local sewage politics.&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>Climate change lives here.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also lives on the street where six Garry oak trees are slated to be cut down to make room for more bike lanes, buses, and sidewalks.&nbsp;&nbsp;Some of us noticed yellow tree removal notifications tacked to trees along the road leading into the centre this morning.&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>\u201cI saw the yellow sign with my Dad when we got here!\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;Rather than waiting around for the plumber to finish, the decision is made to walk outside and see what the signs on the trees say.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Discussion ripples throughout the hallway and centres as children and educators react to the news and prepare to walk across the street to take a closer look:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Oh!!&nbsp;&nbsp;This is aterrible&nbsp;thing!&nbsp;&nbsp;It makes me so mad. Why??! Honestly.&nbsp;<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>They build roundabouts to slow everyone down.&nbsp;&nbsp;Why can\u2019t they leave the trees to slow everyone down too?&nbsp;&nbsp;Do we need perfectly straight lines on the street?<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>If there are signs I think they\u2019ll cut them down.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>It\u2019s completely unnecessary!!&nbsp;<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Why don\u2019t they just make a tunnel underneath for the sewer?&nbsp;&nbsp;Like cut \u00bd the roots.\u201d (one child holds her nose at her friend\u2019s mention of sewage)<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>I heard it might be for bikes.&nbsp;&nbsp;They\u2019re going to plant more trees.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Our conversation continues out into the street. One of the educators reading the sign to children<g class=\"gr_ gr_50 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Style replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"50\" data-gr-id=\"50\">:<\/g><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;This tree will be removed to accommodate the construction of the Finnerty Rd. upgrades.&nbsp;At least 22 replacement trees to be planted in the nearby community.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;Huh. What do you think about it?&nbsp;&nbsp;You know, we also read about it that they\u2019re going to build bike paths here, that\u2019s why they\u2019ll cut the trees down.&nbsp;&nbsp;How do you feel about it?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"276\" height=\"368\" src=\"http:\/\/trees.climateactionchildhood.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/03\/treeRemoval.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-93\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trees.climateactionchildhood.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/03\/treeRemoval.jpg 276w, https:\/\/trees.climateactionchildhood.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/03\/treeRemoval-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 276px) 100vw, 276px\" \/><figcaption>Tree Removal Notice<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Child: <em>I feel like the bark is sad that they\u2019re gonna get trimmed.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Child: <em>Yeah.&nbsp;&nbsp;You think they\u2019re gonna get trimmed.&nbsp;&nbsp;I think they\u2019ll do more than trimming.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Child: <em>I thinking that this one is gonna get trimmed!<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Child: <em>The replacement trees will be in the forest.&nbsp;&nbsp;Or maybe they\u2019ll put them in the community garden.<\/em><\/li><li><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Educator: <em>I heard about children in Vancouver tying their stuffies to trees to save them and you know what?&nbsp;&nbsp;They did not cut the trees down.&nbsp;&nbsp;But I don\u2019t know, I associate that more with someone dying in an accident.&nbsp;&nbsp;But really, I mean I guess the same thing is basically going to happen to these trees.&nbsp;<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Narda: <em>I heard about people who were upset that trees were being cut down in Mumbai, India so they held a&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/e360.yale.edu\/features\/in-indias-fast-growing-cities-grassroots-efforts-to-save-the-trees\"><em>funeral march for a tree<\/em><\/a><em>.&nbsp;&nbsp;They put the tree trunk in a coffin and marched it through the streets.&nbsp;&nbsp;How old do you think these trees are?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Child: <em>I know!&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>100<\/strong>years old.<\/em><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"349\" height=\"464\" src=\"http:\/\/trees.climateactionchildhood.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/03\/TreeRemovalHand.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-94\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trees.climateactionchildhood.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/03\/TreeRemovalHand.png 349w, https:\/\/trees.climateactionchildhood.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/03\/TreeRemovalHand-226x300.png 226w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 349px) 100vw, 349px\" \/><figcaption>Responding<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the educators on her break happens by and stops to talk to us about her thoughts, does as a regular bike commuter on this road: \u201c<em>I don\u2019t know why they are cutting them down.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s wide enough. I have never felt unsafe biking along here.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s a fairly quiet street and it connects to a bike lane right there and then the round-about and more bike lanes.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;Educator in response: \u201c<em>This particular spot is not a problem. You know we always tell children growing up to \u2018respect their elders\u2019, is this how we respect our elders?\u201d (referring to the trees)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Passengers in passing cars seem curious about what we are doing and a few people walking by engage us in conversation.&nbsp;&nbsp;A woman in a stroller with two children says,<em>\u201cOh yeah!&nbsp;Yes, but they\u2019re going to plant a bunch more.&nbsp;&nbsp;And we get to tell them where we want the new trees.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This sounds positive.&nbsp;But, as one of the educators says,&nbsp;<em>&#8220;Do they think that planting new trees replaces those big old ones?&nbsp;&nbsp;Like they are just inter-changeable \u2018things\u2019?\u201d <\/em>Someone brings up German forester Peter Wohlleben\u2019s book&nbsp;<em>The Hidden Life of Trees<\/em>, and how he referred to trees in concrete as \u2018street children\u2019, \u2018orphans\u2019 who are raised without parents or a community to help them grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"315\" height=\"237\" src=\"http:\/\/trees.climateactionchildhood.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/03\/NeighbourhoodTrees.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-96\" srcset=\"https:\/\/trees.climateactionchildhood.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/03\/NeighbourhoodTrees.jpg 315w, https:\/\/trees.climateactionchildhood.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2019\/03\/NeighbourhoodTrees-300x226.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 315px) 100vw, 315px\" \/><figcaption>Noticing trees<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One child says \u201c<em>they can do whatever they want with the trees.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;\u201cHmmm\u201d replies one of the educators:&nbsp;<em>\u201cInteresting.&nbsp;&nbsp;Yes, this may very well be true.&nbsp;&nbsp;Do you think it is okay to do whatever they want?\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;&nbsp;I am reminded of Peter Moss\u2019 discussion of the \u201cdictatorship of no alternatives\u201d in market-driven societies.&nbsp;The question of whether it is \u2018necessary\u2019 to remove these trees dominates our conversations between ourselves and with strangers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We look closely at the trees on the streets and see worms in the leaves at the base of the Garry Oaks, a spider in the crack of the bark, and <g class=\"gr_ gr_3 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling multiReplace\" id=\"3\" data-gr-id=\"3\">neighbouring<\/g> trees who undoubtedly communicate via subterranean networks (\u2018wood-wide-web\u2019) with the help of fungi.
